As stated above, the Hawksmoor has on it’s bar menu one of the top 10 foods in London (taken from the top 100 list) so where better place to go in the West End for a swift pre-theatre munch.

The basement space is furnished with green or red leather benches and bar stools which make it a dead ringer for a New York bar in the prohibition era.

Having also visited Hawksmoor in Spitalfields it was nice to see this location was completely different and so I don’t have to refer to Hawksmoor as a ‘chain’ restaurant group.

So the dish in question is the ‘Short Rib French Dip’  which is braised for days short rib beef soaked in thick gravy then piled into a soft submarine roll with mustard and melted gubbeen cheese (an Irish semi soft washed rind cheese) on top.  There are no words to describe just how delicious this gooey monstrosity is on it’s own……and then you dip it into the marrow gravy…….mmmmm.

To complete the meat extravaganza we ordered some beef dripping fries aswell which went extremely well dipped into the marrow gravy.
